Norris Wins the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix: Full Results and Championship Standings

Lando Norris finally has his 2026 breakthrough. After a season dominated by Mercedes and Ferrari, the reigning World Champion delivered when it mattered most, converting pole position into a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix victory at the Hungaroring and giving McLaren its first win of the year.

Norris survived an early challenge from team-mate Oscar Piastri before taking control of the race once Piastri's afternoon unravelled. Max Verstappen finished second, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli fought back from seventh on the grid to complete the podium.

With Hungary marking Round 11 of the 2026 season, Formula 1 now heads into the summer break with the championship battle still very much alive.

How the race unfolded

The race began with immediate drama. Norris led away from pole but a mistake through Turn 2 allowed Piastri to move into first place, and the two McLarens remained closely matched through the opening half of the race.

The battle changed dramatically when Piastri caught traffic while attempting to lap Carlos Sainz. Contact between the two compromised the Australian's race, and an apparent gearbox failure eventually forced him to retire.

Norris took full advantage of the opening, producing strong pace in clear air and taking the chequered flag 15.080 seconds ahead of Verstappen. Antonelli completed an impressive recovery drive from seventh to third, damage limitation that turned into a genuine gain in the title race.

Qualifying: Norris ends the Mercedes run of poles

Norris produced a stunning final lap to take pole with a 1:17.207, beating Lewis Hamilton by just 0.012 seconds in one of the closest qualifying sessions of the season.

The classified order was not the grid order, however. Hamilton initially qualified second but received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Piastri, dropping him to fifth on the grid. Antonelli was handed a three-place penalty of his own for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags, sending the championship leader from fourth to seventh. As a result, Charles Leclerc moved up to second on the starting grid, with Piastri third.

Antonelli leaves Budapest with the biggest prize of the weekend: his championship lead has grown to 50 points over Hamilton. Norris' victory also moves him up to fifth, while Verstappen's second place lifted him past Piastri and into sixth.

The bigger picture

After 11 rounds, Antonelli remains the man to beat. His third place in Hungary extended his advantage to 50 points over Hamilton, with Russell another nine points behind.

The fight below the top three is where the season is getting interesting. Leclerc sits fourth, and Norris' victory moved him to within 10 points of the Ferrari driver. Verstappen, meanwhile, climbed past Piastri into sixth after back-to-back podium finishes and is 19 points behind Norris.

In the Constructors' Championship, Mercedes leads Ferrari by 72 points, while McLaren's breakthrough win keeps the team third, 43 points clear of a Red Bull squad that quietly out-scored everyone bar Mercedes in Budapest thanks to Verstappen and Hadjar.

The championship now enters the summer break, with the next Grand Prix set to take place at Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix. Eleven races down, and the title fight is only getting hotter.
